A post on PGA Tour pro Nate Lashley’s Instagram suggests that the 2023 Player Impact Program results are out and Rory McIlroy has pipped – pun intended – Tiger Woods to the top spot for the first time.
McIlroy’s first place is worth $15 million providing he fulfills the ‘Player Impact Program Service Fulfilment’ which is worth 25% of the bonus money. Last year, by skipping two of the ‘Designated Events’ – players were only permitted to miss one – the Holywood man reportedly lost out on $3 million (25% of his $12 second prize money), and though players aren’t obligated to appear at all bar one of this year’s ‘Signature Events’ it’s not yet know what the additional ‘Service Fulfilment’ entails.
Winner of the PIP in each of the first two years, Tiger Woods, who’s not played a competitive round since withdrawing from the Masters back in April and since undergoing further surgery, still takes second place and the $12 million bonus, whilst Jon Rahm lies third and is set to receive $9 million.
Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler round out the top five, earning $7.5 and $6 million respectively, and Viktor Hovland who earned over $33 million on the PGA Tour via tournament earnings and the FedEx Cup victory is set to add another $5 million to his fortune after finishing seventh.
There was no additional bonus money for Shane Lowry this year, however. Last year, Lowry finished 12th in the PIP rankings and received $3 million, but this year does not feature among the top-20.
Next year’s PIP will see the allocation cut to $50 million and divided among the top-10 ranked players, as opposed to $100 million and 20 recipients this year, with the additional $50 million instead being spread across the FedEx Cup bonus, the Comcast Business Top 10 and other Player Related Programs.
