Stephanie Meadow enjoyed a blitz of birdies at the annual Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic at Brook-Lea Country Club on the Symetra Tour and sits in solo second place after an opening 66 (-6).

Meadow is just one shot behind leader Csicsi Rozsa (Hungary) who had a career-low round of 65 with Meadow carding birdies at 2 and 3, 6 and 7 and then 15 and 16.

“I’m just happy that I put a round together, been a little up and down the past few weeks,” said Meadow, who has six top-10 finishes so far this season. “To see a low number really gives me a lot of confidence. I knew that my ball striking was there and it was just a matter of time. You just have to play smart and pick your holes to be aggressive. I am really focusing on that.”

While Rozsa and Meadow have created a little gap from the rest of the field after the first round, 18 other individuals sit within four strokes of the leader, including a group of five at 4-under par, with Charlotte Thomas (Guildford, England) one of the players in the mix.

For Leona and Lisa Maguire the learning curve of professional golf continues with Leona in T29 place after a creditable one under par round that included three bogeys and four birdies in a rollercoaster round.  Lisa started well with birdies at the 2nd and 3rd but three bogeys on the bounce from the fourth had her on the back foot and a double bogey on 17 really put paid to her efforts for the day and she is T109.

Second round action picks up later today with a cut to the low 60 players and ties set to be made following play.
