Paul Conroy continued his excellent form in the States as he helped Chattanooga romp to a fourteen-shot victory at the Furman Intercollegiate making it successive wins for the first time since 2012 for the university.
Conroy who won for the first time last week, threatened for back-to-back victories as he finished in a share of third place.
The Enniscorthy man shot a final round of 68 to finish on seven-under, just two shots adrift of Will Morian of Furman who edged James Madison’s Daniel Cheng in a playoff.
Late doubles in rounds one and two have ultimately cost Conroy but he was in scintillating form in round three carding six birdies on his way round Furman University Golf Course.
Birdies on the second and third were followed by a birdie on the fifth which came between dropped shots on the fourth and sixth.
Conroy got back on the birdie train on the ninth and twelfth to keep his hopes alive and after dropping his third shot of the day on 14 he put the cat amongst the pigeons with a birdie on 17.
Still, Conroy was left celebrating as the Tennessee college’s leading scorer for the week.
“Really happy for these guys,” Coach Blaine Woodruff began. “It’s always hard to win, but it’s even harder to go back-to-back. Expectations try to creep their way in. We talked this week about resetting and controlling what we can to give ourselves a chance to contend and keep from focusing on winning itself. We’ll celebrate this one for a day and then get back to work to get ready for another opportunity in Cali.”
Elsewehre Royal Dublin’s Max Kennedy finished in a share of 28th place as Louisville came fifth at the Williams Cup.
There was disappointment for Mark Power and Wake Forest as the Kilkenny man came 57th and the Deacs a lowly 14th in the Golf Club of Georgia.
In the Stanford Intercollegiate, Arizona freshman Beth Coulter finished a respectable 42nd as her university shared ninth.
Douglas native Sara Byrne was 85th as Miami took 15th place.
At the White Sands Invitational Anna Dawson was 27th as Little Rock came 5th.
