John Ross Galbraith is off to a solid start on day one of the Portugal Pro Tour’s Penina Open at Penina Golf Resort in the Algarve.

Second to fellow countryman Daniel Mulligan last week at Palmares Golf Club after shooting an impressive 10-under for the two days, the Whitehead man wasn’t as quick out of the blocks this week, firing an opening one-under 72 to lie tied for 23rd in the 90-man field.

An early birdie and 12 pars saw him reach the 14th at -1, but a double bogey-six brought him the wrong side of par. Two birdies in the next three was the perfect response and a par at the last leaves him well placed just three off the lead and two more rounds to make ground.

Two shots further adrift is Rowan Lester, after a one-over 75. Lester made just the one birdie but dropped shots on the par-3 sixth and par-4 ninth holes before covering the back side in level par to lie tied for 36th.

English duo Adam Winter and Tom Spreadborough lead at -4, the former making eight birdies but mixing in two bogeys and a double while the latter went bogey-free enroute to his 69. Another English duo, Paul Maddy and Daniel Smith are tied for third alongside Korean Dongwon Kim one shot behind the leading duo at -3.
