Whether it’s strokeplay or matchplay, Scottie Scheffler looks a cut above the rest as he eased through his bracket at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.

It’s now just two losses in seventeen matches at Austin Country Club as Scheffler swatted aside Tom Kim 3&2, keeping the 20-year-old at arms length.

“Today I had a lot of good putts. It’s tough when you get the wind around here because it’s so gusty, especially on the greens. There’s some times when it’s blowing really hard or some times it’s blowing really soft,” said the world number one.

“If it’s constant, it would be easier. That’s probably the biggest challenge, is the gusts of wind.

“I felt like today I hit a lot of good putts. I had a couple I wasn’t pleased with, but overall I felt good about my performance.”

There has been no successful title defence since Tiger Woods in 2003-04 but Scheffler, playing in his home state of Texas looks as good a bet as any to put his name alongside the 15-time major champion.

Standing in his way in the last-16 is JT Poston (43) who also has a 100% record having picked up scalps over Tommy Fleetwood, Sungjae Im and Maverick McNealy.

“I heard I’m playing J.T. Poston. In this tournament everyone you’re playing with is very talented. I’m going to have to go out and do my best if I’m going to win. If I don’t, I’m probably going to lose.

“All I can do is go into tomorrow and do my best. Obviously J.T. is a very talented player. Looking forward to the challenge.

“I would say I’m just very competitive. The simplicity of it is what I like. Even if the guy is playing great golf, I know what I need to do.

“Sometimes you’re under the buzz saw, which happens. I ran into a few buzz saws at the Presidents Cup last year, and that happens.

“Overall, I feel like if I’m playing my best, then I should win the match. That’s what I’m focused on doing is trying to go out and play my best and go from there.”
