Golf Ireland regret to announce that Ireland will not be competing in this year’s European Boys and Girls Team Championships.

Scheduled to take place in Denmark and Portugal respectively from July 6-10, players and team officials based in Northern Ireland would be subject to a ten-day quarantine on returning from both countries. As a result, following consultation with Public Health officials it was decided to withdraw from this year’s Championships.

Speaking of the decision, Golf Ireland’s High Performance Director and National Coach Neil Manchip said: “We appreciate that this is particularly disappointing news for those players who, for the second year in a row, will not get the opportunity to compete due to travel restrictions.

“At this moment in time we are very much hoping that we will be able to compete in the European Ladies’ and Men’s Championships with the Ladies event taking place in Royal County Down. The Men’s Championship, which takes place in PGA Catalunya, faces fewer travel restrictions at this moment in time.

“We have been most impressed and most grateful for the understanding shown by the players in light of this news, and we are hopeful that, as public health figures continue to improve, that we might be in a position to resume all team events and travel in the future.”

This an awful and cowardly decision. Why not pick teams without NI players? There’s no guarantee any would have been selected in the first place. If it is all about representation and not (necessarily) winning, a (possibly) weakened team does not matter. Why deprive boys and girls from the other 26-counties of a once in a lifetime opportunity?
