Leona Maguire moved in the wrong direction in round three of the HSBC Women’s World Championship.
Needing a low round to remain in contention, Maguire’s chances were dashed early on as she made back to back double bogeys on the front nine but did well to salvage a 73 for a three-under total.
The Cavan woman started well with an opening birdie but disaster struck on the par-3 4th and par-5 5th as she made a five and a seven to drop back to one-under.
She reversed her luck on the par-3s with a two at the 7th and followed up a bogey on 10 with a birdie at the par-5 13th and another two at the 15th to share 20th place although she is eight shots off the lead held by Hannah Green and Minjee Lee.
Green and Lee hold a one shot lead on eleven-under after rounds of 68 and 69 respectively.
Former champion Green found the tricky conditions to her liking at Sentosa Golf Club as she rolled in five birdies including three in a row on the back nine.
“I felt it was tricky with the pins today and the wind changed throughout the round, so adjusting so that. We also played the ball down, so it was different to actually, one, deal with some of the mud balls, but also not give yourself a good lie even if you do hit the fairway. It was tough out there. I’m not surprised by the scoring. I felt like I played really well today.”
The Australian has her husband as caddie this week.
“I think staying patient is probably the hardest thing when you’re out here, when unfortunately you hit shots and perhaps are not making putts or things like that. I guess having him to kind of bounce off, especially with him being a golfer, he knows what it’s like.
“And a couple times I felt like I didn’t hit great shots but perhaps under the circumstances, they actually weren’t that bad.
“So him understanding that and keeping me patient is kind of what he’s been doing the last two weeks. I’ll need a lot of patience tomorrow, so probably do the same thing.”
