Ian Poulter admits he would love to be involved with Team Europe in some capacity and hasn’t given up hope on a return to the Ryder Cup.

Poulter is a Ryder Cup legend having been dubbed as ‘The Postman’ for his sensational performances in European colours most famously his five birdie finish at Medinah in 2012 which kickstarted a famous comeback.

The 50-year-old hasn’t been involved since he played in the 19-9 drubbing at the hands of USA at Whistling Straits in 2021 but he still believes he can be welcomed back to the set up like Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton have.

“I’d obviously still love to have some involvement in the Ryder Cup in some way, shape, or form,” he told TNT Sports during the opening round of LIV Golf Riyadh where he finished with a level-par 72.

“From a perspective of wanting to have a helping hand in something I’ve been quite a big part of over the last two decades, yeah, it would be a dream come true if we could be in that position.

“It’s worked that way for Jon [Rahm] and Tyrrell [Hatton], and they’ve still accepted those guys in with the Ryder Cup and, hopefully, that relationship can continue.”

While Poulter still harbours ambitions of having a future Ryder Cup involvement it is still up in the air as to who will lead Europe in next year’s contest at Adare Manor.

Luke Donald hasn’t made a decision on a potential third term and 45-year-old Justin Rose looks a certainty for a playing role in Limerick.

If there is a way back for Europe’s old guard from LIV Golf then Graeme McDowell would love to captain the continent next year.

“Of course I would love to captain Europe,” said McDowell to Irish Golfer Magazine, the 2010 US Open champion and a veteran of four Ryder Cups, including three victories.

“It’s in Adare Manor and I mean it would be the greatest moment of my life if I could stand up there. Potentially unlikely, but I would do anything to have that opportunity and we will see.”
