Darren Clarke could get nothing going in round one of the PGA Tour Champions season-opening event in Hawaii, but he found his groove in round two where an eight-under 64 pushed him into the top 15.

Clarke parred 15 of the 18 holes at Hualalai Golf Course for a one-under opening round, but he bridied three of his first four holes on day two, then added an eagle on the seventh and another birdie on nine to make the turn at -6 for the day.

He quickly moved to -7 with a birdie on 10, but a bogey on the next halted his momentum temporarily before he recorded two more birdies in the final five – including one on the par-4 closing hole – to move to -9 overall and into a tie for 15th, with his 64 only bettered by two of the 42 players teeing it up.

Stewart Cink was one of those to go lower, and his 63 moved him to the top of the leaderboard alongside Freddie Jacobson (64) at -15.

Angel Cabrera went one shot better, making 10 birdies and an eagle with two bogeys to shoot 10-under and climb into a share of third with Stephen Ames, one shot behind the leading duo.

66-year-old Fred Couples, who beat his age by one when firing a 65 in round one despite admitting to being under the weather, followed up by shooting his exact age in round two and his 66 leaves him in sole possession of fifth at -13.
