Alex Maguire fired a whopping eight birdies as he roared to within two shots of the lead heading into the final round of the Egypt Golf Series New Giza Golf Club on the MENA Tour.

Maguire’s blistering 66 was the joint low round of the day and he is in a share of fourth place eight-under-par as he looks to catch Italy’s Ludovico Addabbo who equalled his round.

After letting some shots go late in his opening round, Maguire got them back instantly with two birdies in his opening three holes. He added a third birdie od the day on the seventh before dropping shots at the eighth and ninth.

The Laytown & Bettystown star didn’t let that halt his momentum as he charged up the leaderboard with five birdies in his last seven holes on the 12th, 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th to come home in 31.

The 24-year-old has the opportunity to clinch his maiden professional victory and follow in the footsteps of his former Irish teammates Robert Moran and Mark Power who each got their first pro wins before the New Year.

Should he do so he would claim the $18,000 first prize cheque out of the $100,000 prize purse on offer this week.

The MENA Golf Tour remains the only Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) recognised circuit headquartered in the Middle East, providing opportunities for professional golfers from the region and around the globe.

Former MENA Tour players include PGA Tour and DP World Tour winners Robert MacIntyre, Matt Fitzpatrick and Todd Clements.
