Bryson DeChambeau may not be appearing on the PGA Tour anytime soon but someone very much of his ilk is dreaming of teeing it up there next season.

David Carey has made a promising start to the second stage of PGA Tour Q-School as he fired a three-under-par round of 69 in Alabama.

Carey is just four shots off the lead and is outside the qualifying spots by the minimum with the top-14 and ties advancing to the final stage.

The Dubliner who famously carded a 57 on the Alps Tour has similar traits to DeChambeau and one of those is his ability to make birdies at a canter as he benefits from big hitting off the tee.

Carey started with back to back birdies before a double bogey on the par-3 4th halted his progress. He soon got back on the horse with three birdies in his next four holes.

The Castleknock man birdied the par-5 11th and recovered from back to back bogeys on 14 and 15 with a closing birdie.

Despite his big hitting off the tee, Carey played the four par fives in level-par with one birdie and one bogey – something that he will need to improve on if he is to progress up the leaderboard over the next three rounds.

Carey has made two PGA Tour appearances in the past at the RBC Canadian Open and Valero Texas Open both in 2023.
