Seamus Power’s hopes of retaining his PGA Tour card are still alive after he fired a much needed 65 on day three of the RSM Classic.
Power climbed into a share of seventh place on fifteen-under, four shots off the lead which is held by Finland’s Sami Valimaki on ninteen-under.
The West Waterford man needs to finish in the top three tonight if he is to guarantee himself another season on the PGA Tour. Power is 128th in the FedExCup Fall standings, with only the top 100 fully exempt next season, the top 125 would have conditional status.
Sundays have been Power’s achilles heel, he would be much closer to the top-100 had he been able to polish off tournaments on Sunday. He missed a golden opportunity last Sunday to retain his card but he can’t afford any mistakes today.
Things looked like they might fizzle out on the two-time PGA Tour winner after he was one-over through four holes but a wedge to four feet and a superb eagle on the fifth and seventh holes kickstarted his round.
A crucial par save on the tenth gave way to a hat trick of birdies from the 14th as he gave his card hopes a lifeline.
As it stands he is projected to move as high as 113th in the FedEx Cup Fall Standings so he needs another big push today.
