Olivia Mehaffey believes that her best golf could be just around the corner after another what might have been week at the inaugural Women’s Irish Challenge at Malahide Golf Club.

Despite opening her week with a round of 68 to sit one shot off the pace, Mehaffey had to settle for a share of 16th place  after following up with rounds of 76 and 74 for a two-over total. Although it is her best finish of the season on both the LET Access Series and the Ladies European Tour, she was tinged with disappointment.

“Little bit disappointed with the last couple of days, played very well the first day and made a good start to put myself into contention but it’s so hard to play at home,” said the Tandragee woman. “You are so used to playing for yourself but on weeks like this you want to play for your family and friends and everyone who comes out to support so I think playing at home is pretty tough.”

Wednesday’s opening round was just the second time Mehaffey had shot in the 60s this season but she insists that her game feels a lot better than results of seven missed cuts have showed.

“I feel like I have been playing a lot better this year just not been quite able to put it together the whole way through rounds and tournaments but I feel like things are improving and definitely going in the right direction. Just have to be patient and remain consistent with practice and hope that the results will turn around.

“My game is going in the right direction I just need to keep putting the work in but it does feel like I am playing a lot better so I feel like I could be close to a good week at some stage.”

Mehaffey was the star name at this week’s Women’s Irish Challenge which saw fourteen Irish women both amateur and professional tee it up and she feels it is an indication of where women’s golf is in Ireland.

“To think we didn’t have anything in Ireland a few years ago and now we have two pro events it’s really, really special and I think this event will grow and grow. Malahide did an incredible job the course was phenomenal and the greens were so good so it was great to promote women’s golf and it’s really good to see.”
