Leona Maguire remains in second place heading into the weekend at the CPKC Women’s Open at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club.
Maguire’s second round was a mixed bag but it all added up to a 70 to leave her on six-under and three shots behind Akie Iwai.
The Cavan star dropped an early shot on the eleventh but soon got into her stride with back to back birdies on the twelfth and thirteenth before another on the fifteenth made it three birdies in four holes.
Maguire turned in level-par after back to back bogeys on 16 and 17 but remained firmly in contention with a brace of birdies on the 2nd and 3rd holes. A bogey on the 7th dropped her out of solo second and she is alongside Minjee Lee.
Iwai carded a round of 69 to open a three shot lead as she chases a second successive LPGA Tour victory.
The 23-year-old Japanese player won the Portland Classic on Sunday to join twin sister Chisato as a rookie LPGA Tour champion. She’s trying to keep it simple and not get ahead of herself.
“No change mind. No change swing. Just focus my golf,” she said.
Canadian star Brooke Henderson rebounded from an opening 71 with a 66 to get to 5 under. The 2018 champion won the last of her 13 LPGA Tour titles in January 2023.
“I’m right there,” Henderson said. “Just got to keep going, put two more solid rounds together.”
