Seamus Power remains on course to qualify for two of the PGA Tour Signature Events next year despite falling to a four-over 76 in the opening round of the RSM Classic at the Plantation Course.

In the last event of the FedEx Cup Fall series, Power is currently ranked 55th with players ranked 51-60 qualifying for the Genesis Invitational and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at the conclusion of this event.

Despite lying in 144th place and twelve shots off the pace, Power is projected to remain 55th in the rankings.

The Waterford man did make the turn in level-par after two birdies and two bogeys but a horror run of three bogeys in a row from the eleventh and a closing bogey on the par-5 18th brought a messy back nine to an end.

The lead is shared by Maverick McNealy and Michael Thorbjornson on eight-under-par after they both shot opening rounds of 64.

Defending champion Ludvig Åberg endured a tough time out on the course slipping to a three-over 73 on the Seaside course as he made his return to action following knee surgery in August.

“Yeah, it was hard, obviously it was a rough day,” Aberg said. “It was a lot of rust I felt like, but I also felt like the good was pretty good but the bad was really bad.

“There’s some technical things that I’m working on in my swing. I want to load it a little bit better and that’s where that miss comes with the driver. Both times where I put myself in trouble today, it was off the tee.

“If I can fix those things and get a little bit better, I think tomorrow will be a little bit nicer.”
