Alex Maguire sits in a tie for seventh after 36 holes of the Clutch Pro Tour event at Kedleston Park in the English midlands, after backing up with opening 69 with a one-under 71 on day two.

Maguire began the day in a share of eighth alongside fellow countryman Robert Brazill, but of the two rookie pros, it was the Laytown and Bettystown man who fared best. He’ll be disappointed with the finish to the round, however, having gotten to -3 on the day thanks to four birdies and a bogey through 13 holes.

A double bogey on the 15th did most of the damage, and though he clawed back another stroke on 17, he closed out with his second bogey of the day and sits six shots off the lead but just two off second place.

Brazill will also be disappointed with his finish having reached the final hole at level for the day thanks to three birdies, three bogeys and 11 pars. A closing double proved costly, however, and he falls back into a tie for 20th.

He was leapfrogged by English-based Irishman Tyler Hogarty who shot back-to-back one-under 71s to sit on -2 and in a tie for 14th.

Both Rory Williamson and Scott Montgomery bow out of the action at the 36-hole mark, however, both finishing well down the leaderboard.

Englishman Daniel Smith, who has yet to win on the Clutch Pro Tour this season despite being a prominent feature at the business end of leaderboards, looks primed to put that to bed as he takes a four-stroke lead into the final round.

His 66 was the joint lowest of the day in round one, and he backed it up with a 68 on day two and there is a four-way tie for second place at -6.
