Day one of the CPKC Women’s Open was a forgettable one for the Irish duo as Maguire and Meadow struggled in the windy conditions in Calgary. Maguire sits on two-over but just six shots back from the overnight lead of Lauren Coughlin while Meadow sits on five-over and with work to do to make the weekend’s action.
Maguire, beginning on the back nine on day one, was on the back foot straight away with a pair of dropped shots to kick off. One was nabbed back on the par-4 13th before being handed back on the 16th for Maguire to turn on two-over. She couldn’t make progress on her back nine in tricky conditions as she traded two more back and forth on her way home to remain six back in a tie for 62nd place.
Meadow too began her week on the back-nine and that is where the damage was done on her opening day. Four shots dropped and no birdies saw the Jordanstown woman turn on four-over and with work to do on her way back. Meadow steadied the ship on her return leg with a run of six straight pars stemming the bleed before one final dropped shot on the par-4 7th seeing her sit T122 and requiring a rally on day two to ensure her a spot on moving day in Canada.
Coughlin holds the slenderest of leads from Minjee Lee, Hannah Green, Ariya Jutanugarn and Jennifer Kupcho on three-under so will have to come out of the traps quickly on day two to keep her nose in front.
“Yeah, I mean, it was a lot windier than I was expecting, so just had to stay super patient in the beginning. Kind of started getting some putts dropping,” said Coughlin after her round. “Yeah, I mean, it was tough out there for sure, but I hit a lot of really good shots and a lot of good putts.”
“Yeah, I mean was pretty solid all day. I didn’t have too many — I mean, one hole I hit the tree and then it went into the really tall grass, but that’s for another day,” second place Lee said of her round in the wind. “Other than that I feel like I was hitting it really well. Played really smart out there. You know, there are some shorter holes and some longer holes, so the shorter holes I tried to take advantage of. And obviously the par-5s were playing — I think three of them were playing downwind, so it was like if you hit a good drive you’re able to take advantage of 3-wood or a 7-wood. So I think I did that really well today.”
Coughlin heads out to defend her lead at 12.45PM local time from the first with Paula Reto and Sei Young Kim. Maguire begins her second round at 1.16, again off the first while Meadow hits the course at 7.22AM with a job on her hands to stamp her impression on the scoreboard and make the weekend.
