Richie O’Donovan was left ruing a bogey, bogey start as he rebounded to shoot a two-under round of 70 in the Qualifier for the DP World and Sunshine Tour co-sanctioned Joburg Open.

Two-over through two after starting on the 10th, he’d birdie two and bogey one of the next seven to make the turn at +1. Another bogey at the third left him virtually out of the equation, but an eagle-two on the sixth, followed by a birdie at seven and another at nine left him with an hour or so to wait to see if he’d make the playoff or not.

Sadly, when all was said and done, he lay tied for 12th with 10 qualifier places on offer, with South African Reinhardt Blaauw being the unfortunate man to lose out in a four-for-three playoff for the final qualifying spot.

Regardless, playing the final four in four-under was an encouraging way to end the day for O’Donovan, and he’ll be targeting going one better and successfully qualifying for next week’s South African Open, another of the co-sanctioned events which see out the year on both tours.
