Liam Grehan was delighted to notch his first win of the season on the PGA in Ireland circuit with a special home victory at the Mullingar Pro-Am.

The Mullingar native roared to a five shot victory over Simon Thornton with a six-under 66.

They say all good rounds start with a bogey and after doing so, Grehan reeled off three successive birdies on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th before repeating the feat from the 8th.

A bogey on 13 did little to halt him and he finished strong with birdies on 15 and 16.

“I know all the lines pretty well having grown up here! Luckily I had a good team with me as well and we were able to hole a few putts.

“I played with Michael Fetherstone of the K Club so it was pretty cool to have the K Club and Mullingar combine today.”

It’s been a tough start to the season for Grehan who missed out on a Sunshine Tour card in South Africa and has yet to catch fire on the Clutch Pro Tour and he hopes this win can give him some much needed confidence.

“I’ve been knocking on the door and playing alright. Played Clutch this week and played nicely the second day and still missed the cut. It was nice to come home today and shoot a proper score when I really wanted to as well. It’s one I had marked on the calendar alongside the K Club Pro-Am.”

The K Club Professional is looking forward to the €100,000 pro-am in a few weeks time.

“It will be in super condition, the whole team will have it in some shape but with the big prize fund it will be a super event.”
