James Walsh closed with a final round of 73 which was good enough for a runner-up finish at the latest Student Tour Series event at La Sella Golf Club.

The Maynooth University was one of just two players to finish under par for the 54 holes and his one-under total was five shots shy of eventual winner Martin Lucas of University of Lancashire.

Walsh teed off just one off the lead and completed a fine front nine with three birdies on the first, seventh and ninth with his only bogey coming on the fifth. But his chances faded with dropped shots on 10, 14 and a double bogey on 16. The 20-year-old did birdie the last to ensure he took second spot ahead of Stirling’s George Cannon.

Maynooth University had two further players inside the top-10 in the men’s section with Fior Lorenzo sharing fourth on two-over and Ben Cahill was seventh on plus four after he shot the low round of the day with a 68.

Matthew Giles of Ulster University took eighth place on five-over after a 72.

In the women’s section, Anna Dawson of Maynooth University was fifth on six-over with Stirling’s Grace Bowen winning on two-under.
