Poots claims 11th place at South American Amateur

Knock star Katie Poots saved her best round for last as she ended the South American Amateur Championship in eleventh place.

It capped off quite the recovery from Poots who opened her week with an 80 but her final three rounds were impressive as she followed up with efforts of 72, 73 and 69. Her final round total was second to winner Luisamariana Mesones who carded a 68 to beat Emily Odwin in a playoff.

Poots began her final round in fine fashion with two birdies in her opening three holes. She gave those shots back on the fifth and sixth before rallying with three birdies in a row on the 9th, 10th and 11th.

Poots birdied the par-5 13th to make it four birdies in five holes and she recovered from dropped shots on 15 and 16 with a closing birdie for a six-over-par total.

Oughterard’s Kate Dillon was five shots ufrther back in sixteenth place after a final round of 72.

Meanwhile, in the men’s section Malone’s Fionn Dobbin was best of the Irish in 23rd place on seven-over following a final round of 74 while Galgorm Castle’s Joshua Hill moved up to 31st on plus twelve after a best of the week 71.

Ecuador’s Felipe Garces was a four shot winner after a final round of 67.
