Ulster University have been crowned the Irish Colleges Match Play champions after a deserved win at Woodbrook Golf Club this afternoon.
Up against Queens University in the final, it all fell on the last match after Phillip Johnson and Mark Fitzpatrick’s 2&1 win was cancelled out by Queens’ Mark McKinstry’s 4&3 victory in game 2.
Undeterred, Ross Dutton showed nerves of steel to dispatch David Burns comfortably, 5&4 to earn his college a worthy win, 2-1.
In the semi-finals this morning, Ulster advanced past Cork IT 3-0 in what proved an ominous warning to whoever they met in the final. That turned out to be Belfast who got the better of the last Maynooth team standing, MU Club (a) 2-1 in an extremely tight affair.
Congratulations to Ulster University on their victory and Woodbrook on another smoothly run renewal.
