Anna Foster (Elm Park) won the Blake Cup on a countback from Canice Screen (Hermitage) after leading the stroke play qualifying at the Irish Girls’ Close Championship at Clandeboye.
Following the opening 18 holes it was Lauren Walsh (Castewarden), alongside Screene, who sat atop the leaderboard. While Walsh slipped to an afternoon 79, Screene posted a second round 73 for a 148 total.
Meanwhile, after an unfortunate start which saw her go 5 over par after 3 holes, Foster equalled the scoring of Screene, finishing on 2-over for her two rounds. Eagles on the 18th in both rounds ensured Foster’s claimed her place as leading qualifier and set up an opening match play match against Annabel Greham (Ballina) tomorrow.
Evelyn Park (Edmondstown) found the bottom of the hole with her tee shot on the par 3 14th during her first round. Her hole-in-one makes it the third in an ILGU event in the last three events with Chloe O’Connor (Roscommon) and Catherine Reilly (The Heath) both holing out at the Interprovincial Matches and the Irish Senior’s Close respectively.
Sara Byrne kept her hopes alive of being the first person to win both the Ladies & Girls’ Close Championships in the same year and she was T4 in qualifying, keeping up her good form.
Following today’s qualifying rounds, the top 32 players progress to the knockout matchplay stages. Those beaten in tomorrow’s last 32, will progress to compete in the Pat Fletcher Trophy (Plate). Both the Championship and Plate will conclude on Saturday afternoon.
