Having just broken a streak 115 event streak of counting scores for Duke University when she carded a two over 74 in the opening round, Leona Maguire reacted with a stunning 7-under-par 65 to fire herself back into contention at the NCAA Madison Regional in Wisconsin.
Sister Lisa returned a season’s best four birdies for a one-over 73 in round one and added an even par 72 yesterday to sit in a share of 30th place alongside Arizona State’s Olivia Mehaffey on plus one ahead of today’s final round.
Leona, however, struck an incredible eight birdies to grab a share of 3rd spot with the fearsome Cavan competitor now just five behind Oregan State’s Nicole Schroeder who leads on 10-under-par.
Maguire’s exploits have put Duke in a commanding position in the team event too with the Blue Devils eight shots clear of the field on 14-under-par.
Following today’s third round, the top six teams (and top three individuals not on those six teams) from each of four regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla. May 18-23 with Duke looking a shoe-in to progess.
