Three of the top five at the Scottish Boys Championship at Cruden Bay were Irish, but unfortunately, none were in the top two.
Roscommon native Isaac Oliver, who led after round two and held a share of the lead after the first of the two closing rounds on Friday, made a poor start to the final round, making two bogeys and a double bogey in his opening four holes.
He regrouped to birdie four of the closing 14 and remained bogey-free from that point, but the damage had been done and he had to settle for third place at -11, four behind winner Antoni Hawkins of Poland, and three behind runner-up Cornelius Farhang of Norway.
John William Burke of Ballyhaunis carded a closing two-under round of 70 to finish at -8 alongside Harry O’Hara of Clandeboye who took one stroke more.
Wexford’s Luke Furlong clinched a top-10 placing with a closing 74 that saw him share ninth, while a further seven Irish boys were among the 45 players to make the cut.
Hannah Lee MacNamara of Royal Portrush and Tralee’s Emma Vinarcik were the leading Irish finisher in the Scottish Girls Championship, sharing 10th place at +8, while Jessica Reynolds and Ella Cantwell also finished inside the top 20.
