Boyle Sports have installed Jim Furyk as the new favourite to captain Team USA at the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, following confirmation that Tiger Woods will not take on the role.

The 15-time major champion had been expected to lead the American side in Ireland next year, but he informed the PGA of America this week that he does not wish to be considered for the role as he steps away from the sport to ‘seek treatment and focus on health’.

That leaves the PGA chiefs with a major decision as they look to appoint a captain capable of stopping Luke Donald from securing an historic hat-trick of victories, with the Englishman already confirmed as Europe’s skipper following back-to-back successes in Rome and New York.

The betting suggests the USA may turn to experience, with former captain Furyk now leading the market at 5/2. Close behind is Brandt Snedeker at 3/1, who served as Vice Captain under Keegan Bradley at Bethpage in 2025, while Steve Stricker, who guided the USA to their most recent victory in 2021 at Whistling Straits, is also prominent in the betting at 7/2.

Bradley himself, who faced criticism for some of his pairings during Team USA’s defeat in 2025, is a 12/1 shot to take on the role again.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for Boyle Sports, said: “With Tiger Woods out of the picture, there is a large degree of uncertainty amongst golf punters with quite a few candidates coming in for support. Jim Furyk has emerged as the early favourite, but whoever gets the nod will assume underdog status from the outset as Europe are already odds-on to make it three in a row under Luke Donald.”
