The PGA of America have confirmed that Tiger Woods has turned down the opportunity to captain Team USA at the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor.
This is part of the 15-time major winner’s decision to step away from golf for a period to focus on his health and wellbeing after he was charged with a DUI last week after being involved in a car accident.
A statement read: “We commend Tiger for prioritising his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision.
“Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as captain of the 2027 US Ryder Cup team and we support his decision. The PGA of America will share further updates regarding the Ryder Cup captaincy when appropriate.”
Woods had previously been tipped to lead USA at the JP McManus owned Adare Manor whom he holds a close friendship with but last week’s events have put paid to that.
The 50-year-old did escape unhurt but having been expected to make a Masters appearance next week and announce his captaincy for the Ryder Cup, he is firmly out of the picture after a fourth road accident since 2009.
Police reported that he showed signs of impairment and investigators found two hydrocodone pills in his pocket – a prescription opioid used to treat severe pain – during a search of his vehicle.
Woods has had numerous surgeries in his career with a serious crash in 2021 giving him multiple injuries including shattering his leg – of which he has never really recovered from.
The former world number one hasn’t played since missing the cut at the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon although he did make a brief TGL return a fortnight ago.
