Brandel Chamblee believes it is time for Tiger Woods to call time on his playing career following Friday’s car crash and subsequent DUI arrest in Florida.
Woods was charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit a lawful test after his Land Rover clipped a pressure cleaner truck whilst overtaking it at “high speed” he tested .000 on a breathalyser but refused to give a urine sample at the scene.
The 15-time major winner hasn’t played a competitive round of golf since the 2024 Open Championship but had been teasing golf fans about a potential Masters return in two weeks. Hype around him teeing it up at Augusta National intensified when he played in TGL last week. But after his latest car crash, Chamblee believes Tiger should call it quits.
“It’s clear that Tiger Woods has a history of pushing himself to his physical limits beyond his physical limits,” said Chamblee. “The stories are of him not needing a lot of sleep. When you sleep, your body repairs itself.
“He’s up two, three, four in the morning at the gym, grinding it out all day long. You know this puts a considerable stress on what is already a fractured and fragile body. And to the degree that he keeps hurting himself, injuring himself and requiring surgeries.”
Woods, who is now eligible to play on the Champions Tour where the stress on his injury ravaged body would be eased by use of a golf cart in competition, registered for July’s US Senior Open. It is the only USGA event he hasn’t won alongside his US Junior, Amateur and Open titles.
However, Chamblee sees no value in playing the over-50s circuit.
“He’s done his work in the game of golf,” he added. “Nothing he’s going to do on the Champions Tour, with all due respect, to senior golf, we all love it, but it will add nothing really to his legacy.
“And you know, it’s clear that since 2021 when he’s come back, he can’t play at a competitive level on the PGA Tour.
“His body just won’t let him do what his talents have previously let him do. That seems like the only circumstance that would alleviate this problem.
“Beyond that, you just hope that he gets the care and the help that he needs.”
