Stuart Grehan marched on to the last-32 of the Spanish Men’s Amateur Open Championship at Real Club de La Puerta de Hierro as leading Irish qualifier John Doyle fell at the first matchplay hurdle.
Grehan had to battle valiantly to make the cut after 36 holes of stroke play but he looked close to his impressive best as he cruised through to today’s last-32 stage with a 5&4 win over Jeffrey Shen.
The County Louth man, who became the third Irishman to win both the Irish Amateur and Close titles last year, faces American William Lisle.
Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for Fota Island teenager Doyle who slumped to a 5&4 defeat to Czechia’s Hugo Miki, let’s hope that isn’t an omen for Thursday!
In the meantime, Grehan charges on looking to become the first Irish winner since Reeve Whiston in 2013 and add his name to a list of winners that includes Darren Clarke, Michael Quirke and Philip Walton.
