US President Donald Trump admits that he would love to attend the Amgen Irish Open at his Trump International Doonbeg resort in September.

Rory McIlroy recently confirmed his place in the field as he looks to successfully defend the title which he won in such dramatic circumstances at the K Club last year and Trump could be front and centre.

“We have a great golf complex in Ireland, one of the best in the world, it’s called Doonbeg. It’s been amazing, Rory McIlroy loves it, they all love it, great golfers. You have a tremendous golf tradition,” Trump said when sitting beside Taoiseach Mícheál Martin as part of the Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations in Washington.

“It was chosen for the Irish Open which is a big deal, it’s a big event. Everybody wants me to be there and we are going to try, it would be an honour.”

As ever, Trump was quick to amplify the significance of the event at his Doonbeg resort and who knows, perhaps his name on the door will entice some blockbuster LIV stars like Bryson DeChambeau to tee it up in County Clare.

“It was a great honour to be chosen, they only choose the best courses in the world for the big opens. The Irish Open has really become one of the most important tournaments in the world it’s going to be a fantastic success.”

Last month The Clare Champion reported that President Trump is earmarked to be on site at the tournament at some stage during the week as the DP World Tour and Doonbeg resort began plans for the $6 million event.

Trump previously visited the resort in 2019 as part of his state trip to Ireland.

Should Trump choose to attend the tournament then security presence is likely to be heightened.

“In terms of local access, I think it’s important to say that we need to understand the impact of potential VIPs – which member of the Trump family will visit,” said Chris Upson, a Senior Championship Manager with the DP World Tour.

“We are working with the local authorities in terms of what a cordon might look like.”
