Pádraig Harrington knows better than most that no two days are the same in golf and he proved that on day two of the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational at Boca Raton.
Harrington had opened with a dismal seven-over 79 but came roaring back with a near perfect round of 66 to sit on one-over and in a share of 27th place.
Starting on the back nine, Harrington opened with back to back birdies before his only bogey of the day came at the 18th.
The three-time major winner and reigning US Senior and Senior Open champion roared home in 31 thanks to an eagle, birdie start to his back nine and further birdies on the 4th and 7th.
Harrington won’t trouble the winners’ enclosure as he trails debutant Zach Johnson by nine shots after the American also shot 66 to lead by one on eight-under.
The former Masters champion was pleased with how he scored as he leapfrogged George McNeill and Steve Allan into the lead.
Johnson despite being the youthful debutant at 50, took a golf cart for parts of the round.
“My game was really quite solid today. There was probably a hole, hole and a half today where I had to had some nice saves. But for the most part, it was really solid. I may have looked comfortable.
“I’ve got to say that the therapists I’ve had the last two or three days have really done a great job. I’m feeling 50 plus; we’ll just say that. I didn’t know if I was going to be playing today. That’s extremely encouraging. That may be a slight embellishment. I probably would have tried to fight, regardless. But I was more pain-free today than I anticipated, which is great.
“I decided to take a cart today for a few of the holes, which probably helped my legs a little bit, too, given I didn’t sleep much last night. All being said, I am extremely encouraged with the last two days. I just scored better today.”
