Leona Maguire carded a three-under 69 as a strong finish helped her to within three shots of the early lead at the Blue Bay LPGA in China.
Maguire birdied three of her last five holes to turn an average day into a good one and she lies in a share of 14th place.
The Cavan woman found herself one-over after four holes after bogeys on the first and fourth and a birdie on the second. She turned level par after a birdie on the 9th but didn’t click into gear until back to back birdies on the 14th and 15th.
She finished with a flourish as a closing birdie helped her to three-under and she has sights on co-leaders Mary Liu and Weiwei Zhang.
There was also a positive start for Lauren Walsh who opened her rookie LPGA Tour campaign with a one-under 71 to lie T26th.
Walsh had quite a colourful card as she mixed five birdies and four bogeys in an eventful round.
The Castlewarden native took time to settle into things and was two-over after five holes but quickfire birdies on the 6th and 9th saw her make the turn as she started. She fell over par again with a bogey on 12 but showed a glimpse of what she is capable of with three birdies in four holes on the 14th, 15th and 17th holes to get to two-under before a closing bogey.
Stephanie Meadow is six-over after a 78.
