Gavin Tiernan registered his best finish of the US college season so far with a share of fifth place at the Colleton River Intercollegiate.
Tiernan ended the 54-holes at Colleton River Plantation with a five-under total which was five shots behind eventual winner Diego Do Patrocinio Lourenco of Memphis.
The East Tennessee State University golfer was just one shot off the pace after an opening 66 but fell to a second round of 74. He recovered well with a closing 71.
The County Louth Golf Club man began his final round on the 10th and picked up his first birdie on the par-3 13th. He recovered from a bogey on 15 with two birdies in three holes to close out his front nine.
His back nine was less eventful with eight pars and a bogey on the par-3 3rd.
It’s a second top-10 finish of the season for the Walker Cup star who was making his first appearance since January.
Kansas State’s Fionn Dobbin closed with a 71 to move up seventeen places to 44th on four-over while Cian O’Connor was 72nd on plus eleven.
