Elm Park’s Emma Fleming is just three shots off the early pace after the opening day of the Spanish Ladies Amateur at Sotogrande.

Fleming carded a level-par round of 72 to share 7th place as she looks to close the gap on Adriana Garcia Terol who leads by one after a 69.

The Dubliner began her round on the back nine and it was a rollercoaster few hours as she mixed two birdies with three bogeys and a double bogey seven on the par-5 16th to turn in three-over 39.

However, Fleming came roaring back into contention with a clean back nine where she picked up birdies on the par-5 2nd, 4th and the par-3 7th.

It was a good day for the Irish in general with Roscommon teenager Olivia Costello nicely placed in the top-20 after a two-over 74 which also included a back nine rescue mission.

Costello found herself five-over through ten holes but rallied with birdies on the 3rd, 8th and 9th.

Lahinch’s Aideen Walsh is a shot further back on three-over in 22nd alongside Irish Golf Writers’ Amateur of the year Anna Dawson after they shot rounds of 75 with Kate Lanigan on plus four.

Anna Abom and Hannah Lee-McNamara are eight-over.

Round two is currently suspended until 11.am local time.
