Robert Moran boosted his hopes of a HotelPlanner Tour card with a share of second place at the New Giza Open as he moved into third place on the Alps Tour Order of Merit at the end of the Egyptian swing.
Moran carded a final round of 66 to finish on 13-under, two shots behind Italy’s Andrea Romano who has now won back to back events.
The Castle professional made a quick start with birdies on his first and second holes before adding birdies on the 6th and 9th to turn in 32. His only bogey of the day came on the 10th but he kept his title charge alive with birdies on 12, 14 and 15.
Moran has now leapfrogged his compatriot Sam Murphy on the Alps Tour rankings with Murphy dropping to fourth after he finished in a share of 21st place.
With this victory, Romano earns €6,200 and 6,525 Order of Merit points. He strengthens his position at the top of the rankings with 13,925.25 points, ahead of Mario Galiano Aguilar (9,787.50) and Moran (8,088.75).
“It was a really tough day for me because I didn’t sleep well last night. I woke up several times and felt a bit stressed at the start, which showed early on with a bogey on the first and another one on the seventh. But on the back nine, I told myself to stay patient because I knew my game was solid. My putting was key today — when I’m putting well, I know I can be very competitive and put myself in contention. Starting the season like this is amazing, I couldn’t have asked for better start. Now I’ll reset, take a short break, and stay focused because the season is still long and it’s not done yet.”
The players will return to action on Thursday April 9th, for the Villa Paradiso Alps Open, in Italy.
