Alex Maguire showed up well in windy conditions once again as he climbed into a share of second on day one of the MENA Tour’s Hilton Classic.
Maguire carded a round of 68 to lie on four-under and just one shot off the early pace set by Aron Zemmer of Italy.
The Laytown & Bettystown man has four top-10 finishes in five starts on the MENA Tour and despite not being able to get over the winning line yet he has been a key beneficiary of regular action.
Maguire started with a birdie on the par-5 10th before dropping a shot on the 12th. He roared to the turn with a blistering run of a birdie on 13, eagle on the par-5 15th and a birdie on 17.
He took the lead with a birdie on the 6th but dropped back to four-under with a bogey on his penultimate hole.
Next best of the Irish is Marc Boucher on one-under after a 71 while Paul McBride is one-over despite starting his round with an eagle.
McBride was three-under turning but after a bogey on his tenth he finished bogey, double bogey to come home in 40.
Last week’s runner-up Mark Power is three-over after a 75.
