While the jury remains out on the TGL, Rory McIlroy, who co-founded the tech-infused league along with Tiger Woods, remains bullish that future expansion of the project is a possibility.

Speaking after his Boston Common Golf Club lost their 100 per cent record in 2026, falling 5-2 to inaugural champions Atlanta Drive GC, McIlroy suggested that constructing an additional venue on the west coast of the United States is something in consideration, as is taking it on the road around the United States or even internationally.

Originally slated to begin in 2024 in the air-supported SoFi dome, a power outage causing partial deflation forced the project to be delayed for a year, and when it actually commenced in early 2025, it was in the newly-constructed, state-of-the-art SoFi Centre – a brick and mortar, long-term home – and McIlroy believes that the delay was most likely to the league’s advantage.

“Hopefully,” he replied when asked if the vision existed to expand. “I think that’s the long-term goal. To build this facility was obviously a big undertaking, and we were delayed a year, but it was probably a blessing in disguise.

“To replicate one of these facilities on the West Coast maybe, just to make the travel back and forth a little bit easier, but then if we could do it where we can say, yeah, bring it internationally or travel with it, however that looks. Obviously you have massive concerts that travel around the country and they can set things up. So maybe in time.”

It was recently announced that a women’s league (WTGL) would be introduced later this year, and McIlroy believes that the addition of the women’s competition could be the precursor to the construction of a second facility, though time will tell.

“Obviously we’re only into year two, and we’ll see how it goes,” he said. “Obviously we’ve got the women’s league coming up later this year, so hopefully that goes well. Maybe if that’s Phase II, maybe Phase III is trying to build a facility elsewhere.”
