Liam Grehan narrowly missed out on playing his way into the DP World and Sunshine Tour’s co-sanctioned Investec South African Open in Tuesday’s Pre-Qualifier.

The Mullingar native, who is plying his trade on the Sunshine Tour at present, was one of 71 players competing at Paarl Golf Club with four four places into the main event at Stellenbosch Golf Club on offer.

Among the early starters off the first tee, he made the turn at level-par after bogeying the first, making three birdies in a row from the fifth, and then making a double on eight.

But four birdies and no dropped shots on the back side got him into the clubhouse at four-under-par, but as the day progressed, it became evident that he’d come up just shy with former Ryder Cup star and eight-time DP World Tour winner Bernd Wiesberger and South African Xander Basson taking the final two places at six-under.

This means that, for the first time in 2026, there will be no Irish representation in a DP World Tour event, though a strong field is assembling, including current Race to Dubai leader, Patrick Reed, five-time major champion Ernie Els, and LIV Golf stars Charl Schwartzel and Dean Burmester, along with a most of the DP World Tour regulars.
