Galway’s Joe Lyons and David Dunne of County Sligo secured a one-stroke victory in the Spanish Senior Men’s Pairs International Championship at Real Club de Golf El Prat in Barcelona.

The duo opened with a round of 66 in fourball format, which saw them take a share of the lead into the final round where greensomes – both players tee off and play alternate shot having selected the best drive – would be the order of play.

In tougher conditions, a four-over-par 76 was enough to see them edge a trio of Spanish pairings, while fellow Irishmen Karl Bornemann and Steven Graham shared fifth place a shot further adrift.

The duo will now go into Thursday’s Spanish Seniors Championship brimming with confidence. Lyons, who turns 54 this year, won this event in 2024, while Dunne is playing in his first full year on the senior circuit.

After 36 holes, the leading 60 players and ties will advance to contest Saturday’s final round.

A strong Irish contingent features Peter Sheehan, David Mulholland, and Declan O’Neill, alongside Lyons, Dunne, Bornemann and Graham.
