Ireland made the perfect start to the Women’s Octagonal Matches at Costa Ballena as a strong singles performance saw them overturn a morning deficit to beat Austria.

Ireland trailed 2-1 after the morning foursomes but they bounced back in style to win 5-4 ahead of their day two clash with Sweden.

Olivia Costello and Aideen Walsh got the Girls in Green off to the ideal start as they picked up the opening foursomes point of the day before Jessica Reynolds / Ella Cantwell and Gemma McMeekin / Kayleigh Mulholland were beaten by the Austrians.

Ireland took the singles on a 4-2 scoreline. Walsh and Reynolds suffered 18th hole defeats but Costello stepped up in style with a 5&4 win over Julia Bauer to send her side on their way.

Cantwell defeated Johanna Janisch 2&1 before Kayleigh Mulholland eased to a 5&4 win in the anchor match to seal a comeback win.
