Xander Schauffele missed a birdie putt on the 36th hole of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines to hand over the longest ‘made cut’ streak to world number one, Scottie Scheffler.
Schauffele, who hails from San Diego, was playing in front of home support but failed to get up-and-down from over the back of the par-5 ninth hole on Torrey’s North Course, missing his first cut since the 2022 Masters, 73 starts previously.
Schauffele took it down to the wire, battling back from a first-round 73 on the difficult Torrey Pines South Course to give himself a chance on the back nine of his second round. The two-time major winner made three birdies in the first four holes of his inward nine on the North Course Friday. That put him 3 under and on the right side of the cutline, but a bogey at the par-4 seventh, his 16th hole of the day, dropped him one below the line.
“I had plenty of golf today to make it and bogeying a drivable par 4 and parring two par 5s in the middle of the fairway, you deserve to miss the cut,” Schauffele said. “So here I am.

While Tiger Woods’ record of 142 consecutive cuts made remains far and away the longest streak ever, Schauffele now hands the baton to Scheffler who has made 65 starts since missing his last cut which came at the FedEx St Jude Championship in August, 2022.
Despite the obvious disappointment, Schauffele was able to look on the brightside as he is where he grew up and surrounded by family.
“Obviously I don’t like missing cuts, I think my record proves that, but it’s actually kind of nice, to be honest, if I was going to pick a spot,” he said.
“I get to hang out with my family. If I miss the cut in Charlotte or somewhere, I would just be sitting in a hotel room by myself. I have the comfort of my family here to hang out. You know what, all said and done it’s probably the best place to miss it.”
He was far from the only big name to miss the cut, however. Will Zalatoris, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, and Ludvig Åberg were also big-name casualties, while Brooks Koepka shot a four-under 68 to make the cut on the number at -3.
