Rory McIlroy and Boston Common Golf Club had a nightmare campaign in year one of the TGL, but they’ve made the perfect start to season two, making it two wins from two with a comprehensive win over Bay Golf Club at the SoFi Centre on Monday night.
McIlroy, alongside Keegan Bradley and Michael Thorbjornsen, ran out 9-1 winners over Lowry, Wyndham Clark and Min Woo Lee, moving to the top of the League standings with each team having played two matches.
Boston took an early lead by winning the opening hole, but Bay GC struck back immediately and the match remained tied at one apiece through four holes with Lowry sinking a clutch nine-and-a-half-footer to tie the fourth after a hammer had been thrown and accepted.
But it all went wrong from there for Lowry and co., as three holes in succession went in Boston’s direction and another win on the ninth ended the teamplay section with McIlroy’s side up by four at 5-1.
They continued to pile on the pressure, and with McIlroy in the hole for four in the first singles hole against Lowry, Bay GC opted not to accept the hammer as Lowry faced a 15-footer to tie the hole, and hopes of a comeback were dashed when Thorbjornsen held his nerve on a five-footer on the next to tie a hole worth two points.
The next three holes all went to Boston, leaving them 9-1 ahead playing the last, and with a 15-point haul over their first two matches, they moved to the number one position in the standings with 15 holes won to Atlanta Drive’s nine.
“Yeah, it was fun,” McIlroy said afterwards. “We came out of the blocks early. Yeah, we started well. Michael has been an amazing addition to the team, has sort of taken to this style of golf really, really easily, much easier than Keegan and I did last year.
“But I think with a little more experience from us, we’re getting more comfortable in here, too, and it’s showed over the first two matches.”
