Alex Maguire opened his MENA Tour campaign with a two-under 70 at the Egypt Golf Series New Giza Golf Club event.

Maguire lies six shots off the pace at the $100,000 54-hole event where the first prize is $18,000.

The Laytown & Bettystown professional who played all four rounds at last year’s Amgen Irish Open put together an excellent front nine of 33 to move into contention. Birdies at the 12th, 14th and 16th had him in good shape and he added a fourth birdie of the day at the first.

He will be disappointed to have dropped shots on the second and eighth holes which saw him fall back into a share of fourteenth place alongside former European Tour winner Alejandro Canizares of Spain.

The leader is Slovakia’s Zan Luka Stirn who carded a blistering 64 to lead by two shots on eight-under-par.

The MENA Golf Tour remains the only Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) recognised circuit headquartered in the Middle East, providing opportunities for professional golfers from the region and around the globe.

Former MENA Tour players include PGA Tour and DP World Tour winners Robert MacIntyre, Matt Fitzpatrick and Todd Clements.
