Alex Maguire’s hopes of clinching an Asian Tour card for 2026 were given a massive boost after he opened with a superb 66 at the final stage of Q-School.
Maguire sits in a share of fifth place on five-under-par which is just two shots off the lead held by Will Florimo and Michael Pearce but more importantly he is comfortably inside the top-35 which would secure status for next season.
The Laytown and Bettystown star had momentum behind him after a sensational finish to the pre-qualifier last week and he continued in such fashion with a birdie on the first hole.
Maguire roared to the turn in 32 courtesy of three successive birdies from the fifth and he got to five-under with another birdie on the tenth.
The 24-year-old is no stranger to producing thrills and spills in a round of golf and he did so again after he followed up a double bogey on the par-4 12th with birdies on 13 and 17.
Meanwhile, JR Galbraith is just one shot outside the top-35 on two-under-par after a hard fought 69.
Galbraith started well with a brace of birdies on the 5th and 6th holes but handed those shots back on 7 and 8.
He caught fire on the back nine with birdies on the 13th, 15th and 17th but he dropped outside of the top-35 with a closing bogey which leaves him in a share of 38th place with four rounds to play.
