David Carey’s PGA Tour dream is very much alive after he eased through the second stage of q-school in Alabama.
Carey led the rain delayed event overnight on eleven-under-par after a blistering round of 64 and a final round of 72 saw him claim second place on that figure, two shots behind Sam Choi.
Carey had been a birdie machine for the first two rounds but his final effort was very uneventful in comparison as he mixed two birdies and two bogeys.
Had the big hitting Dubliner topped the leaderboard at RTJ Golf Trail at Highland Oaks he would have guaranteed himself Korn Ferry status for next season.
Now he heads to TPC Sawgrass looking to snatch one of the five PGA Tour cards available.
The 29-year-old would also secure Korn Ferry status if he finishes in the next 40 and ties next week.
The Castleknock man came to prominence when he shot a sensational record 57 on the Alps Tour in 2019.
He has had a taste of the big stage before, qualifying for the Open Championship in 2022 at St Andrews where he made the cut and was T18 through two rounds using two drivers.
He eventually finished 62nd but did get some PGA Tour playing opportunities the following year when he qualified for the RBC Canadian Open and Valero Texas Open, missing the cut in both.
2024 and most of 2025 saw him curtailed due to health issues but now he is looking to give himself a playing platform heading into 2026.
