Aodhagan Brady is just one shot off the lead after the opening day of the King Hamad Trophy in Bahrain.

As ever, Maynooth University have brought a strong contingent with them to Royal Golf Club and Brady is the best of them in third place on five-under after a 67.

He trails USA’s Ahmed Ali and former European Tour winner Joel Stalter but leads the amateur section by a shot from Luis Ferreira Da Silva.

Brady was flawless in his opening effort as he rolled in birdies on the sixth, twelfth, fourteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth in a blemish free round.

Michaely Young is next best of the Irish on level-par which is good enough for 16th place while Maynooth student James O’Rourke is one-over after a 73 which sees him in 17th in the overall and 6th in the amateur ranks.

Conor Thornton, James Walsh and Shane Kenneally are in a share of 30th on four-over after rounds of 76. Cian Harkin is seven-over while James Blackwell is +18.
