The second round of the Sunshine Tour’s Hyundai Open ended on Saturday after a second suspension of play on Friday due to lightening in the area postponed the round to Saturday morning.
Dublin’s Rowan Lester was in flying form after his first round score of six-under-par and the 28-year-old picked up where he left off in the second round.
Lester’s first birdie came at the par-4 fourth as Lester split every fairway on the front nine. Taking the turn at one-under for the round, Lester added another quick birdie at the 10th, before adding another on the par-5 18th to post a three-under-par 69 to take him to T8 at nine-under.
Speaking on Friday, Lester said “I’ve been here a few times before with the Irish team. I really like it here and the style of golf suits my game. The food is good and the people are very friendly.”
“I feel like I have been playing nice all season to be honest. I’ve been just a few shots out of top-10s the last sort of six weeks. It’s just the putting that has been letting me down. This tournament, I had a few good putts and that’s the difference between shooting one or two under par, compared to six or seven under par. It was nice to keep the bogeys off the scorecard,” added Lester.
It’s heartbreak for Liam Grehan as the 28-year-old did all he could to get inside the four-under cutline but just missed out. A superb bogey-free six-under-par second round gave Grehan a chance as he get to three-under par which was the projected cutline for the majority of the round.
Like Lester, Grehan split every fairway as he made two birdies at the fifth and sixth before adding four more at the 12th, 14th, 17th and 18th.
South Africa’s Casey Jarvis holds a one stroke lead at 14-under heading into round three which is taking place directly after round two on Saturday evening.
