Séamus Power had to return to Black Desert Resort early on Saturday morning to complete the final three holes of his second round, knowing that he needed to play them in at least one-under if he was to avoid going home.
He did exactly that, birdieing the seventh – his 16th – and closing with two pars to put his name on the round three tee sheet, but making the cut on the number was still far from ideal for a player needing to climb 35 places in the FedEx Cup rankings over the closing four events if he’s to keep a full PGA Tour card for 2026.
A three-under 68 in round three was his best of the week, but at five-under after 54 holes, he’s 12 shots off the lead and tied for 52nd.
Michael Brennan got into the Bank of Utah Championship on a sponsor exemption after tearing up PGA TOUR Americas. He’s in position to leave Black Desert on Sunday as a PGA TOUR winner.
Brennan shot a seven-under 64 on Saturday in sunny conditions on the scenic course framed by red-rock cliffs to take a two-stroke lead over defending champion Matt McCarty.
“I have a great opportunity tomorrow, so try to take advantage of it, stay focused,” Brennan said.
Making his third career PGA TOUR start and first as a professional, Brennan is trying to become the first player to win on a sponsor exemption since Nick Dunlap last year in the American Express.
“I was a little nervous, definitely,” Brennan said. “I don’t think it was anything crazy. Nothing that I hadn’t experienced playing professional golf on (PGA TOUR Americas). I felt like those experiences were pretty similar, which I’m very happy about. I’ve had some experience, and I hope to draw on that tomorrow. But when you’re out on the golf course it’s just you and the golf course.”
McCarty matched Brennan’s 64 to move into sole possession of second place, while Rico Hoey and Kevin Yu both went one better and shot 63s to join Pierceson Coody in a share of third at -14, three back of the leader.
