Stuart Grehan was again Ireland’s top performer on the final day of the Eisenhower Trophy – The World Amateur Team Championships – in Singapore, but his efforts weren’t enough to prevent a further slip down the leaderboard for the Irish team.
Grehan carded a birdie and 17 pars on the final day, taking his individual tally to -5 for the week, but with Caolan Rafferty carding a two-over 74 and John Doyle closing with a 76 with the best two scores counting, it meant Ireland finished with a one-over final-round score and dropped back to level-par altogether, falling two places to share 21st on the final leaderboard.
South African Christiaan Maas took a 10-stroke lead in the Individual standings into the final round and closed with a 69, matched by Australia’s Declan O’Donovan who was in second place, and they finished one-two on the leaderboard at -22 and -12 respectively, with Morocco’s Adam Bresnu and Oscar Couilleau sharing third at -10.
Maas’ efforts helped South Africa to top spot on the team leaderboard at -29, eight clear of second-placed Australia, while England’s team of three 2025 Walker Cup players finished strongly to secure the bronze medal on -19.
“Excitement, happiness, relief,” said Maas when asked his overriding emotions immediately after victory was secured. “We had a big lead coming into today. We are just happy and excited that we finished it up.”
“Yeah, I mean, I don’t think we needed to do anything too special,” added Maas’ teammate, Daniel Bennett. “[Christiaan]Maas has been playing good all week, so we kind of knew that he was going to play well, and we just needed one other good score.”
