Rowan Lester had just rolled in a birdie putt on the par-5 third hole of his opening round at the Sunshine Tour’s Limpopo Championship at Euphoria Golf & Lifestyle Estate when electrical storms rolled over the province north of Johannesburg and forced the suspension of the day’s play.
The birdie on the third was Lester’s second in the three holes, having made a ‘three’ on the par-4 second and it moved him into a share of 11th when the hooter sounded.
Liam Grehan, playing alongside his compatriot, also birdied the third but he’d made bogey on each of the first two and lies tied for 59th.
They’ll return to the course on Friday morning at 7:15 to complete their second rounds, looking to track down the leaders who managed to safely navigate their morning rounds.
Keelan van Wyk outscored his younger brother Kieron by one stroke to take the clubhouse lead on five-under-par before the day’s play was halted.
Older brother Keelan’s opening round was bogey free and earned him a one-stroke lead over his sibling Kieron as well as Rupert Kaminski, who is fresh from competing in last week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.
It was a strong start from both the Van Wyk brothers.
Kieron in particular is in his rookie season as a professional and is making his debut in the Limpopo Championship following a glittering amateur career on the US College golf circuit which saw him become the first Black golfer to win the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) individual conference title in 2022. He also finished tied fourth in the PGA TOUR’s Puerto Rico Open in March while still an amateur.
